I've always tried to follow, as a guiding principle in my approach to patients, a famous quote in medicine, "…for the secret of the care of the patient is in caring for the patient."
Dr. Ulaszek was called to medicine at a young age and has served as a teacher and physician.
"I've always had moderate to severe illness, mostly allergies and asthma since I was a young child. I thought medicine would be a good way to help others, as I have been helped," he said. "Now, I have been teaching medicine for many years as a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, and I have been fortunate to teach many medical students, residents and physicians. I've enjoyed it."
Dr. Ulaszek believes in a collaborative approach to his patients' care and treatment. Good communication, including actively listening to his patients, is essential.
"I enjoy primary care and internal medicine, as I feel that I can focus on adult medicine. I get to see so many different patients with different presentations of illnesses," he said. "But I also enjoy the science foundation and background, so important in practicing medicine."
Dr. Ulaszek feels that the OSF HealthCare Mission "to serve persons with the greatest care and love" is very important and a big factor in choosing to work for OSF HealthCare.
