"I bring 17 years of clinical experience in the conservative treatment of spine and musculoskeletal pain using physical therapy, short-term pharmacological treatments and various spine and joint injections. It is my practice philosophy to help patients return to their lifestyle goals through non-surgical treatments whenever possible. To reach this goal, I begin with a thorough history and physical examination and review relevant imaging studies to better understand the patient’s condition. A treatment strategy is discussed and implemented once a clinical diagnosis is made."
Dr. Ahmad chose to work for OSF HealthCare because he saw a unique opportunity to return to the Urbana–Champaign area and develop a comprehensive pain and spine program, as well as be close to family.
During an appointment, Dr. Ahmad takes the time to thoroughly understand his patients. He conducts a detailed history and physical examination, followed by a review or request for imaging studies like X-rays or MRIs. He then discusses a non-surgical treatment plan, which may include physical therapy and injections.
The OSF Pain and Spine Center offers both non-surgical and surgical check-ups, as well as treatments like epidural steroid injections. There is also a room where special tests are done to check how well your nerves are working and to see if there are any issues like neuropathy or carpal tunnel.
Dr. Ahmad’s journey into medicine was deeply influenced by his father, who valued education and worked hard to earn a degree in civil engineering after immigrating from India to Pakistan. Inspired by his family physician, Dr. Ahmad pursued a career in medicine, eventually specializing in spine, sports and musculoskeletal medicine. His extensive fellowship training in Honolulu prepared him to offer non-surgical treatments for back, neck and joint pain.
Born and raised in Karachi, Pakistan, Dr. Ahmad completed his medical degree at Dow Medical College. He is a family man with three children: a son studying health administration at the University of Illinois, a daughter majoring in finance and theater at DePaul University and another daughter in 7th grade. His wife works in human resources and is also a fitness trainer.
In his free time, Dr. Ahmad enjoys taking care of his yard, playing cricket and basketball, and traveling both within the U.S. and internationally. He is also deeply involved in his community, helping to establish the Avicenna Community Health Center, a free clinic that provides medical care to the uninsured. He has also contributed to projects like restoring the city court’s clock tower and building the Champaign public library and YMCA.
